Ocean, I get all kinds of different symptoms, ranging from an intense burning sensation along the entire rim of my ribcage (when the spirits are of the “darker” kind), to dizziness or lightheadedness, to nausea, to the more pleasant sensation of vibration in my lower left calf (more commonly) or in the soles of my feet (only occasionally).  Any of it can definitely cause me to feel shaky on top of that.

One time, when we were in the big 3-story antique barn in Mullica Hill (that’s what we call it, though I believe it was actually a mill back in the day), intense emotion overcame me for no particular reason.  I hurriedly left, b/c if I hadn’t, I would have burst into tears right then and there.  The feeling was overwhelming and unlike anything I had experienced before, out of the blue like that.  It was all I could do to control myself.  I then suddenly had the sense that there was a male entity in his 40’s there, who had died an untimely, tragic death, and I was picking up on the ghostly impression he had left on one of the items in there for sale.  I’ve gone back since, several times now, and not experienced anything at all.  I do not know why some spirits communicate with me, yet others do not.  I know that some of them come and go.

I now routinely psychically protect myself by visually surrounding myself with a bright, pure white light.  This seems to do the trick.  One of the entities in the Old Jail in Jim Thorpe, PA hijacked a ride in me for 3 days back in 2007.  I was sick off and on for 3 whole days.  My cell phone would turn itself off.  I was having horrible nightmares.  I was seeing black shadows “swimming” around up by the ceiling in the dead of night.  I felt as if I was caught between and existing in multiple dimensions simultaneously.

We were on vacation, spending 2 days at each place.  We went from dropping my son off at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, to Jim Thorpe, PA, and then down to Cape May.  When we were leaving Cape May, we had a very close call with a near-accident.  Fortunately no impact, but a lot of swerving.  That’s the moment I felt this entity “leave” me.  I left him behind in Cape May, and he didn’t plague me at all for the rest of our trip (from Cape May, we went on to stay in Blairstown for 2 nights, and then on to Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco to pick up my son from Scout Camp).  That vacation was one of the strangest I’ve ever had.

The old Moravian cottage where we stayed in Blairstown was built in the 1700’s, so it was pretty old.  I experienced spirits in there, but none of them caused me to feel ill.  I was so grateful to feel well again.

I know that the entity I picked up in Jim Thorpe was while inside The Old Jail.  We snuck away from the main tour group and went down into the dungeon by ourselves.  At the bottom of the stairs, just before entering the actual dungeon (in the basement), I saw a baseball-sized white orb sail across the doorway from right to left.  We continued to experience other things while down there alone (dark shadows, and the dark figure of a man in one of the cells).  During our walk back into town after we left, my left ankle was hurting, and it felt as if I had a clamp or shackle around it.  Once I sat down, the pain went away and didn’t return.

On a subsequent trip, we were on the grounds outside, and a voice loudly whispered in my ear, “We didn’t do it!”.  I could actually feel the breath of the voice inside my ear.  The voice was right there.  The voice sounded just like those voices you hear on TV when they are playing back an EVP.  Except this voice was live in the moment – what they call a “disembodied voice”.  Intense fear shot through me.  I could not stop thinking about the sound and the sensation of that voice in my ear for several days after.  I know it was the disembodied voice of one of the Molly Maguires who had been hung at The Old Jail in the late 1800’s.  I believe the voice was that of Alexander Campbell, who is thought to have been the inmate who placed his dirty handprint, now infamous, on the wall inside Cell 17.

I have had one of the stories I wrote about The Old Jail published in Weird Encounters.  There is more I could write about my experiences there since then.  It is a sinister place, but all of the old jails are.  If you are sensitive in the least, I would strongly suggest psychically protecting yourself first, before you venture in.  Even if you are not sensitive, I would still suggest this of everyone, no matter where you go, and even if you stay inside the 4 walls of your own home on any given day.  You never know what might decide to make its presence known to you in any given moment.

Oh, I wanted to add that the spiritual activity here in my home was so high while I was getting a new roof put on in 2001, that I nearly fled my own home.  I wasn’t getting sick, per se, but the activity was intense, due to the nature of what was going on, as well as the frequency.  The only room it would not enter was my son’s bedroom, so guess where I camped out for about a week?  If the activity hadn’t suddenly stopped once they finished the roof, and as a result given us a break, I probably would have been driven from my own home.  That’s how bad the feeling of terror had gotten.  The activity resumed 4 or 5 days later, but it was never again as intense as it was while they were putting the roof on.  The break in activity allowed me to regain my composure and learn how to deal with it when it resumed.  Though I must say I learned how to do this with the help of an email sent to me from one of the ghost hunter societies (I’m pretty sure it was Dave Juliano’s SJGR), after I reached out for help, out of desperation.  I had a “talk” with the ghosts, and they have cooperated with me ever since.

Oh, they still come around sometimes, and sometimes an unfamiliar spirit, or the spirit of a deceased loved one, passes through, as do our 2 deceased cats.  But at this point, it is more of a curiosity and nothing to fear any longer.  You see, we all have an understanding now.  They come and go, but sometimes they rest here for a bit; and though they are welcome, they have to remember that we live here too, and so, there has to be a mutual respect for one another.  And so there is…
