Turbocharging down the oncoming lane of the Whitehorse Pike I was stunned and amazed to see a real operational Batmobile jetting towards me. I did my own "bat-turn" 180, smoked my tires after this vehicular treasure, and pulled up alongside asking for a snapshot. I was pleasantly surprised to have met a real NJ hero named Jay Weatherby. Although Jay doubles as Batman...hiring out the car for parties and promotional events,he is heroic for several reasons actually. Sharing his spirit of nostaliga and creativity, he fearlessly goes where no mortals dare to without superhero status. (namely childrens birthday parties and corporate promotional events
)
The Batmobile was manufactured in Minnesota by a gentleman named Paul Floyd. It was created by modifying a 1988 ford escort hatchback, minus the rear seats, fitted with real exhaust tubes, and red strobes in the front cowling. The finish of the car is a very tough and durable coating commonly used to line the beds of pick-up trucks. It`s a compound called "herculiner" giving the Batmobile a rough flat-black appearance. The roof has been cut off and various materials used for the hydraulic trunk. Some of the fabricated body panels are old metal signs such as "mobil-oil",and "lube shop",etc. There is a bit of fiberglass work in there,and the car has a sound system that blares the original 1960`s Batman TV theme,making the car far beyond cool in my opinion. The Batmobile actually passes with ease all NJ state motor vehicle inspections,..how many of us can say that about our cars?
The first time Jay went to get the vehicle inspected it was a different story ,..the Parsons inspectors all clambered over each other to be the inspection agent that got to process the "NJ Batmobile", but the supervisor was afraid to even inspect it. Jay took the car to the DMV, spoke with those in charge of such matters, and all was taken care of.
With the legal aspects in order, the car was on the road for all in NJ to enjoy seeing as its turbines swooosh down our thoroughfares. As I spoke with "Batman" it became apparent that he was truly a hero for a reason that makes all the people of NJ proud,..and makes people like Jay special. He is a firefighter who went to the gulf coast for a month,..lending his time and great spirit to rebuilding small towns in Mississippi during the Katrina disaster. Its people like Jay that make NJ special,..and seeing him motoring along in a Batmobile was fittingly appropriate once I found out more about him. A local firefighter and a NJ dude through and through,...you will not be able to miss him if he drives by. Holy Smokes!!!
